Mathematics AA HL

The hardest Maths course in the Diploma, while at the same time full of interesting concepts and calculations. Students need to work hard to master it, but it is extremely fulfilling once the pieces fall into place.

Where the marks go

Six things that cost students the grade.

Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is algebraically demanding and requires a deep understanding of the concepts. The exam questions are the hardest of any Maths course, and sustained practice is needed for the highest marks.

  1. Number and algebra

    Proof by induction

    Can be applied to almost anything, but usually involves long lines of complicated algebraic calculations.

  2. Number and algebra

    Complex numbers

    A quite abstract topic that can take time to wrap your head around, but very prominent on exams.

  3. Geometry and trigonometry

    Vectors, lines and planes

    Three-dimensional problems with a lot of details and different types of equations to understand.

  4. Calculus

    Implicit differentiation and related rates

    In many cases the hardest part of differentiation, and requires knowledge of several other Maths topics.

  5. Calculus

    Integration techniques

    AA HL has the most types of integration techniques of any Maths course, and understanding which one to use in which situation is a hard-learned skill.

  6. Assessment

    Paper 3

    The only paper that is HL only, and the one people usually lose most marks on. It requires plenty of practice and should not be left for last.
